Three Spanish ex-pats headed out "in quest of altitude" in Qatar, which is known for its flat terrains with a maximum point above sea level of 103 meters (338 feet). But nothing can stop a true explorer, so in 2011, these three Spaniards set out on a quest to find a rock-climbing site in the desert so they could continue their favorite activity.

They actually Googled "rocks in Qatar" in the hopes of uncovering any hitherto undisclosed locations. After a thorough examination of maps using Google Earth, they discovered certain formations on Qatar's northwest side that would be suitable for their needs. So they got into their car and drove in that way, hoping to locate a good location for their favourite outdoor sport.

The Zekreet National Park, on the country's northwest coast, is home to a variety of enormous rock formations, the largest of which rise to roughly 15 metres, and this is where they headed. There were a lot of promising locations, but one in particular, shaped like a horseshoe from the top, drew their interest, and that's where it all began.
