Day 2
Full Day Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Memorial Tour
Sachsenhausen was the nearest concentration camp to Berlin, lying in Oranienburg just 20 miles (35km) north of Berlin. This forced labor camp was the nerve center of the whole concentration camp system, a place where the SS were trained, and a place where around 200,000 prisoners of the Third Reich were held between 1936 and 1945. Our Berlin city tour package takes you through the history of many of the groups persecuted by the Nazis in this location; Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals, Jewish people, political prisoners, and POWs, among others. Your guide will explain the work details that the prisoners had, from back-breaking labor in the brick factory to the top-secret counterfeiting program, “Operation Bernhard”. Sachsenhausen’s history doesn’t end with the Nazi’s defeat in 1945, though. The tour will also cover the Soviet’s use of the site from 1945-’50 as the infamous “Special Camp 7”.
